The Challenge of Arctic Sea Ice Thickness Prediction by ECMWF on Subseasonal Time Scales

نویسندگان

چکیده

A recent study has provided the first thorough assessment of subseasonal Arctic sea ice edge prediction in operational forecast systems. However, corresponding thickness (SIT) is still lacking. Here, SIT reforecasts from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) on time scales are evaluated using a well-developed reanalysis data set. The results show that ECMWF forecasts more skillful than persistence (PFs) during transition seasons lead times longer 30 days, indicating advantages dynamical prediction. suffers large initial errors and lower skill PF, especially March to June. Thus, predictions face many challenges, improving mean model assimilating satellite-estimated ocean analysis would significantly improve forecasts.

Arctic Sea Ice Extent Prediction

Climate change is a pressing and present issue which has come to be at the forefront in the last few decades. As such, understanding climate change is of utmost importance. In addition to environmental impact, these changes will have social and economic ramifications as these changes will affect the way in which we utilize land and sea resources in the future. The minimum annual arctic sea ice ...

Sea ice thickness and recent Arctic warming

The climatic impact of increased Arctic sea ice loss has received growing attention in the last years. However, little focus has been set on the role of sea ice thickness, although it strongly determines surface heat fluxes. Here ensembles of simulations using the EC-Earth atmospheric model (Integrated Forecast System) are performed and analyzed to quantify the atmospheric impacts of Arctic sea...

Sea ice meiofauna distribution on local to pan‐Arctic scales

Arctic sea ice provides microhabitats for biota that inhabit the liquid-filled network of brine channels and the ice-water interface. We used meta-analysis of 23 published and unpublished datasets comprising 721 ice cores to synthesize the variability in composition and abundance of sea ice meiofauna at spatial scales ranging from within a single ice core to pan-Arctic and seasonal scales. Two-...

Improving the spatial distribution of modeled Arctic sea ice thickness

[1] The spatial distribution of ice thickness/draft in the Arctic Ocean is examined using a sea ice model. A comparison of model predictions with submarine observations of sea ice draft made during cruises between 1987 and 1997 reveals that the model has the same deficiencies found in previous studies, namely ice that is too thick in the Beaufort Sea and too thin near the North Pole. We find th...

Radionuclides in Arctic sea ice: Tracers of sources, fates and ice transit time scales

Arctic sea ice can incorporate sediment and associated chemical species during its formation in shallow shelf environments and can also intercept atmospherically transported material during transit. Release of this material in ice ablation areas (e.g. the Fram Strait) enhances fluxes of both sediments and associated species in such areas. We have used a suite of natural (Be, Pb) and anthropogen...
